It’s difficult to say considering the multiple factors that play into weight loss. If you are committed to the new lifestyle your dietitian and exercise physiologist will lay out for you, our goal is to see you begin to lose 2 to 3 pounds a week for the first year or so after surgery. Band adjustments also play a factor, and this is something you will have to work closely with your surgeon. You should be more concerned with seeing gradual weight loss as opposed to fast results, as this is the healthier way to shed the pounds and resolve health problems.
How is the LAP-BAND System adjusted?
Adjustments can be done in the office by using an x-ray machine. Your surgeon will locate the port which is just under the skin, and using a fine needle will either add or remove saline according to the tightness level desired. For most patients, this is a painless procedure oftentimes only requiring lidocaine which will numb the surface of the skin. This process usually takes a few minutes, though is very important to maintain the desired weight loss results.
Will I feel hungry or deprived with the LAP-BAND System?
The LAP-BAND is effective because it not only reduces the amount of food your stomach is able to hold, but it also increases the amount of time it takes for food to get through the new passageway. Because of the reduction of space, you have the sensation of feeling full with a smaller amount of food. This is also why it is important for you to start with foods that are high in protein and vitamins, so that you are not filling up on empty carbs or sugars. Since there is no re-routing of your intestines with this procedure, you will be able to eat any food that you want, so it is truly important that you change your lifestyle in addition to surgery.
How long will it take to recover after surgery?
When performed laparoscopically, LAP-BAND patients are usually able to leave our hospital within 24 hours. We encourage patients to be up and walking before they are allowed to leave, and suggest returning to work in about a week depending on your job descriptions. It will take approximately 4-6 weeks before you are able to exercise, however walking is encouraged daily. If there are complications with the surgery and it turns into an open procedure, recovery time may be longer. This is something that will be discussed when going over the risks of surgery.
Can the LAP-BAND System be removed?
The LAP-BAND is meant to be a tool in your weight loss journey; however if you or your surgeon decide that removal of the band is necessary, this can be done usually in the same laparoscopic way that it was put in. Once removed, your stomach will gradually return to its original shape and weight gain may occur.
